LA CITÉ D’ORIENT 2026
The ‘Cité d’Orient’ in Harnes, in the  Mining Basin of northern France, consists of former miners’ houses that have since become social housing, all owned and managed by social landlords company.

Over the years, the promised renovations have failed to materialize. As housing conditions continue to deteriorate, residents face increasing health risks and uncertainty, while a growing number of homes remain vacant.

The arrival of architects and researchers initially brought hope for change. Together with residents, they began developing a participatory and highly local approach to renovation, rooted in the specific needs and knowledge of the neighborhood. Yet every proposal for action has been delayed, blocked, or refused.

The district now exists in a strange suspended state: neither renewed nor abandoned, caught between promises of rehabilitation and the high possibility of demolition. In this context of long-term neglect, this work operates both as an archive of a disappearing living environment and as a potential starting point for forms of citizen resistance.
